Checklist of Preventative Measures for Cooling Towers

Regular maintenance and inspection

Establish a maintenance plan

Clean the basin when slime, algae or dirt are visible

Consider flushing and cleaning the entire system two to four times a year

Disinfect the tower if extremely high legionellae counts are detected or an outbreak occurs

Conduct weekly inspections: Check drift eliminators, fix leaks, check for corrosion, deterioration and blockages, and make sure that fans, motors, and pumps are operating properly

Consider monthly dip slides to evaluate the water treatment program

Operation

Treat water for control of scale, corrosion, and microorganisms

Clean tower before start-up after a long shutdown

New cooling tower purchases

Compare the drift eliminator efficiency ratings

Be sure that the entire basin and other components are cleanable

Design, location, improvements

Locate new cooling towers as far as reasonably possible from outdoor air intakes, operable windows, and frequented areas

Relocate outdoor air inlets that are within 25 feet of a cooling tower

Shield the cold-water basin and other wet surfaces from sunlight to prevent algae growth

Keep pipe lengths as short as possible and the number of bends (fittings) to a minimum to prevent the formation of biofilm

Keep kitchen exhaust, plants, and other sources of living organisms as far from cooling towers as reasonably possible

Consider installing high efficiency drift eliminators on existing towers
